High expectations as Gor Mahia set out for Angola

Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia will set off for Luanda, Angola on Tuesday 12 February for their second match of Group D in the CAF Confederations Cup against Petro de Luanda set for a day later at the Stadio 11 de Novembre.

The clash is scheduled to kick off at 7pm EAT and Gor Mahia CEO Lordvick Aduda has confirmed the team will depart at 11.30am EAT for the trip straight to Luanda aboard Kenya Airways.

Gor Mahia heads to the clash high in confidence, after their win in the Mashemeji Derby on Saturday 9 February, which was just a highlight of their fine run in recent times and with loads of expectation of the team, Aduda has challenged the players to give their all for a positive result.

Dreams and expectations

“The team carries the dreams and expectations of the whole nation; we all hope for a positive result, with the first option being a win and the second a draw.

“Our opponents lost their opening game, while we won so they will be keen to keep their dream alive and indeed we expect a tough match out there. The players know the challenge that lies ahead of them and I believe they will give their best,” he told Soka.

Heading to the game; Gor Mahia leads Group D on three points and a better goal difference ahead of second placed NA Hussein Dey who beat the Angolan side 2 – 1 on Match Day 1. Gor picked a 4 – 2 win over Zamalek on the same day.

Memories of 2018

Memories of a campaign that fell short at the last minute last season will definitely be with Gor, after finishing third in the group to miss out on a semi final place and Aduda still feels the pain.

“We all saw what happened the other time; we went to Match Day six leading the group but finished the day in third place. We don’t want a repeat of the same and thus it will be crucial for us to pick a positive result in this game,” he added.

Gor Mahia will be without top striker Jacques Tuyisenge, who scored a brace in the opening win over Zamalek as he is on suspension. Defender Philemon Otieno is also suspended.
