National Super League (NSL) newbies Fortune Sacco currently occupy 8th position on the second tier log after 15 rounds of matches and look set to cause a potential upset among the leading pack in the division.
Despite being held to a 1-1 draw by fellow newbies Eldoret Youth last time out, the side that hosts its home matches at the Thika Sub-county stadium attribute their good form to support from all the stakeholder at the club. A small club but on the rise, with loyal fans that throng the stadium every time Fortune Sacco play in Thika.
Eric Odhiambo- a center-back at the club, reveals this.
”We are consistent because we work hard. There is a lot of motivation from our fans and we never want to let them down. The management has done well too and our welfare as a team handled very well. All these are the reason we are where we are,” says Odhiambo.
One of the side’s key wins in the first half of the season was a shock 2-1 dispatching of former premiership side Shabana FC. Odhiambo however says the South Nyanza side should have been more careful when they traveled to Thika because Fortune Sacco had just lost a match to current log leaders Wazito FC.
”We have had some great results over the past few weeks but I think the one against Shabana was crucial to our morale as a team. We had just lost and needed to get back to winning ways,” adds the 23 year old who has only missed two matches for the side this season.
They take on Bidco United next on Saturday 23rd in what football lovers from Thika town will term as a derby. A tough one for Fortune Sacco as they take on a side that despite being behind them on the log, has been in the second tier for so long.
He hopes for a positive result.
”We want a win from the tie. It’s a tough one, they are more experienced and definitely play well. As for us we will approach the game with positive energy and hope for a win or at least a point,” he concludes.
The side is currently coached by player-coach John Mabia who has played for Wazito FC previously.
