Shikanda out of the picture as Nzoia closes in on new coach

Contrary to wide expectation, former Kenyan international Ibrahim Bura Shikanda will not be the man taking the head coach’s mantle at Nzoia Sugar, with the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) side set to name the new man in the course of the week.

The position fell vacant a fortnight ago after Nicholas Muyoti moved to Kakamega Homeboyz and for a while, it was expected the club would pick on Bungoma Superstars coach, Shikanda but club chairman Ngisa Mokua has poured cold water on that with the confirmation it will be an equally good coach, only falling short of saying who.

Not finalized

“We have not yet finalized but I can confirm it is not Shikanda, but he is a good coach as well and we will be making it public this week. We are in talks and they are at an advanced stage; we are trying to get the perfect fit because here we are considering both the coaching and playing departments,” he told Soka.

The new man in charge will take over the team on a high after the win over Tusker in the 16th round of matches and Mokua confirmed he will get enough time and support to settle in.

With the midseason transfer window set to swing open, the new coach will also need a lot of support from fellow members on the bench, and that is also guaranteed, according to the chairman.

Transfer window

“All these plans are also in consideration of the transfer window; you know we operate on a well- functioning system and once he is confirmed he will have very supportive people around him to guide him through.

“The transfer window is soon opening and he will have honest assistance on how to add or deduct from his team, so that should not be a worry,” he added.

Next up for Nzoia Sugar is a clash against KCB on Sunday 10 March.
