Sofapaka FC forward Umaru Kasumba is the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Player of the Month for the month of February; this after an impressive showing in front of goal that saw him bag four goals in three games.
He garnered 19 votes to claim the award ahead of Bandari’s Yema Mwana (15 votes) and Gor Mahia’s Nicholas Kipkirui (14 votes).
He becomes the third recipient this season after Kakamega Homeboyz winger Peter Thiong’o who bagged the season’s first award in December and Bandari’s Abdalla Hassan who was feted for the month of January.
Speaking after being awarded on Wednesday 20 March, Kasumba, who so far has managed seven league goals, welcomed the award which he believes will spur him towards claiming the golden boot come the end of the season.
“I’m very pleased to win this award because it is my first ever. It presents a challenge to me for I have to keep performing. There cannot be room for complacency since I want to win the golden boot this year. I have the advantage of being coached by someone who won the golden boot four times during his playing time,” the Ugandan national said.
He walks away with Kshs 100,000 as prize money from league sponsors SportPesa and a 49 inch TV set from award sponsors LG Electronics.
The former Sports Club Villa player started the month with a goal in the 2-0 win over Kariobangi Sharks before following that up with the equalizer that secured a share of the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Kakamega Homeboyz before wrapping it up with a brace in the 4-1 thumping of then log leaders Mathare United.
Sofapaka for their part received Kshs. 100,000.
