Defending Women’s Premier League (WPL) champions Vihiga Queens have begun the new season with intent, targeting to retain their crown for the third successive season.
The side currently sit top of the standings after four match days, having won all of those fixtures in a hot streak of form which has been led by Harambee Starlets forward Teresa Engesha.
Engesha’s clinical form in front of goal has her on seven goals after four matches which accounts to 46% of Vihiga’s total tally of 15.
Engesha, who joined Vihiga from cross-county rivals Vihiga Leeds mid-way through last season and ended up netting 17 times, has a clear lead at the top of the league scorer’s chart as well.
Topistar Situma has four goals in Vihiga’s lethal attacking tandem.
It is not only in attack that Alex Alumirah’s charges are dominating, the team’s defence is solid with no goals conceded to help solidify their perfect start to the campaign.
Two other teams have a 100% start and they are 2nd place Gaspo Youth and 2016 champions Thika United who are 3rd. Both teams have played a game less though than the leaders.
Thika’s Mwanahalima Adam is tied on second on the scorer’s chart with Soccer Queens’ Lavendar Akeyo. Both have managed five goals each.
