Vihiga United Football Club takes on AFC Leopards on Wednesday 27th in Kakamega in a round 19 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) fixture scheduled for a 3 pm kick-off.
Despite a series of exits at the club, the Vihiga County sponsored outfit will welcome back skipper Ben Ochieng who returns from doing duty for the Kenya national team Harambee Stars against Ghana’s Black Stars on Saturday 23.
Coach Mike Mururi’s side has in the past couple of days experienced a number of players exiting the club- some for greener pastures and with two wins in their last two outings, United will definitely be tails up against Ingwe.
Goalkeeper Geoffrey Oputi is a confirmed exit, and so are Tera Fernandez and Collins Kisuya. So far, only former goalkeeper Caleb Wamalwa has been roped in at the side as an addition. He returns to the side after a brief stint with Vihiga Bullets FC in the FKF division one.
Ochieng’s return to the club for the dicey Leopards game points to a side keen on bagging all the spoils from the Bukhungu fixture. Over the weekend out in Accra, he came on as a second-half substitute as hosts Ghana ran out 1-0 winners over Kenya in the Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier match.
He almost lacks words to express the feeling.
”It was a good feeling because first, we played a good game. Playing alongside those stars was something and for me, I want to believe it is the beginning of something big,
”I also want to thank the coach for trusting me. It shows that he believes in my abilities and I am confident I will never disappoint,” Ochieng tell Soka.
It was his second time on the field with the senior Harambee Stars squad having previously featured against India last June in the Hero Intercontinental cup.
Vihiga United take on a Leopards side that has won three of its last five matches, the latest one- a come-from-behind 2-1 against Western Stima FC. They lie one point above Vihiga in the division.
