Vihiga United came from behind to claim a point in a 1-1 draw with Sofapaka in a Kenyan Premier League (KPL) clash played at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Thursday 4 April to maintain distance between them and the drop zone as well as dent Batoto Ba Mungu’s title hopes.
After a barren first stanza, Stephen Waruru opened the scoring just six minutes after the restart, making the most of a spilt shot from Vihiga keeper Michael Matasio to put his side on the path for a fifth straight win.
But Vihiga would respond with Chris Masinza finding the equalizer in the 73rd minute that consolidated the point for Vihiga which in turn stretches their unbeaten run now to six games.
For Sofapaka it is a case of dropped points as they are now seven points adrift of leaders Gor Mahia in the race for the title while Vihiga earn a point that could do them a world of good come the end of the season when the relegation fight is decided.
Mike Muiruri’s charges currently lie in 14th place with 20 points, three points above the drop zone.
