Sofapaka head coach John Baraza has been named the Fidelity Insurance /Sports Journalist Association of Kenya (SJAK) March Coach of the Month, and duly feted for his role in the team’s rise, after taking over from Melis Medo earlier in the season.
Baraza guided Sofapaka to four wins in the month, in the four Kenyan Premier League (KPL) matches where the team scored eight goals and conceded just one.
Sofapaka opened their schedule in the month with a 1-0 win over KCB at home before producing a 3-0 win away to Chemelil Sugar at Chemelil Complex.
The 2009 champions continued with their fine form, beating AFC Leopards 1 – 0 at Bukhungu Stadium then wrapped up the month with a 3-1 win at home against Mount Kenya United.
Baraza garnered eight points in a poll conducted by SJAK panel with AFC Leopards tactician Andre Cassa Mbungo coming in a distance second while Gor Mahia’s Hassan Oktay came third. Cassa Mbungo guided AFC Leopards to three wins, a draw and a loss while Oktay guided Gor to three wins in the month.
Baraza becomes the fourth recipient of the award in the current season after Western Stima’s Paul Ogai, Mathare United’s Francis Kimanzi and Gor Mahia’s Hassan Oktay were awarded in December, January and February respectively.
