On Sunday 28 April, Mathare United will be looking to scale higher on the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) log when they take the trip to Machakos to face Sofapaka and the team’s skipper Crispin Oduor has called on his matches to give their all.
The clash will be the early kickoff on a day the venue hosts two matches and Oduor believes only good team spirit can lift them on the day, against an opponent that handed them the biggest defeat of the season, a 4 – 1 thrashing in the first leg.
Sofapaka are unbeaten in 11 matches heading to the clash and meet Mathare United on the back of a win and a draw and with nine points separating the two sides, Oduor says the desire to close the gap will be their major motivation in the game.
“It’s always a high scoring encounter between us so we have to be at our best from the onset. We’ve showed great team spirit in our last two games, it’s important we carry that into this game.
“The fact that they are above us on the table is enough motivation for us. The mood in camp is great and everybody is ready to put in a great shift,” he said on the club’s website.
Mathare United have not been at their best defensively in the recent matches, but they have been scoring consistently. Oduor hopes they can tighten up at the back and still be able to bang in the goals.
“Defensively we have to be cautious. We conceded early in the first leg and it was difficult to recover. We can’t afford to give them too much space since on a good day they can be ruthless,” he added.
In the last six meetings between the two sides, Mathare United have only claimed one win. Sofapaka have won three and only one of the last six matches has ended goalless.
