Achieng buoyant after dispatching Vihiga Queens as Alumira rues ‘worst match’

Thika Queens head coach Benta Achieng may be elated by her girls’ outstanding show against title holders Vihiga Queens on Sunday afternoon when they won 2-1 but points out that the level of competition in Kenya’s premiership is what gives her the thrill.

The 2016 champions scored through Fauzia Omar and Rachel Muema to dispatch the visiting Vihiga side 2-1, a result that only brings them closer to the champions but also ends Vihiga’s perfect start to the 2019 season.

Coach Achieng is a happy tactician.

”I’m very pleased with the three points. Breaking one’s unbeaten run is not easy. I am happy my players gave out their all, we had decided to commit and ensure that three points remain here,” she says after the match, in an interview with the Football Kenya Federation Media team.

Thika last won the title in 2016 and have watched as Vihiga bagged two successive titles. Coach Benta however, thinks things have changed and no one is no longer weak in the league.

”The competition is very good this time round, sometime back you could have big gaps in the league but now you can see everyone is being knocked,” she says.

From the opposite dugout at the Thika sub-county stadium was Alex Alumira, watching as his team fell for the first time this season. He modestly takes the result, admitting that they were second best to Thika in the afternoon.

”We didn’t deserve to win today considering the way we played. I have to be honest we just didn’t play well. This is the worst match we have played this season. We were not stringing passes together and were second best,” says Alumira, recently appointed assistant coach of their men’s team Vihiga United who play in the men’s premier league.

Vihiga Queens’ consolation goal came through Harambee Starlets forward Terry Engesha- putting a little respectability in the scoreline but doing little to stalling their surge to a third successive title.

While Thika get to 21 points from 10 matches, Vihiga stay at 30 points from 11 outings but maintain top position on the log.
