Tanzania national team head coach Emmanuel Amuneke has included 15-year-old Kelvin John Pius in his initial 39 man squad for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals set for Egypt later in the year.
Amuneke said that he was really impressed by John who was nicknamed after French star Kylian Mbappe at the recent AFCON U17 finals which Tanzania hosted last month.
As quoted on BBC, Amuneke said “I believe it is time we start to build a team and think of the future.
“We need to start to think of the youth and see how we can start to integrate them in the system.”
The squad picked includes a mix of foreign-based players and those from the local leagues, as Amuneke also eyes early plans for the CHAN qualifiers, which come right after the AFCON finals, with Tanzania set to face Sudan.
“The squad is not just for the AFCON but also the CHAN after that,
“So as the technical team we are planning how we can switch straight to CHAN after the AFCON.” He added
John scored in Tanzania’s opening game as they lost 5-4 to Nigeria and went onto play in the losses to Uganda and Angola as the hosts failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament.
Apart from John, another youngster Claryo Boniface from the Under 20 is also on the list.
At the 2019 AFCON finals, Tanzania are placed in Group C alongside Kenya, Senegal and Algeria.
