Mental strength key for final stretch, Okoth notes

Vihiga United FC head coach Sammy Okoth hopes to see the team go on a good run in the final stretch of matches in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) and he observes that key to this is a stronger character from his charges.

The coach took over at the team four match days ago and after securing his first win in charge in Round 27, a 2 – 1 victory over Vihiga United, he hopes it forms the base for a strong finish that would see the team rise from 16th place, its current position on the standings.

Psychological aspect

Next up for Okoth’s team is a home game against Bandari, at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega and the coach notes that the preparation has largely been on the psychological aspect.

“At this point of the season, mental strength is very key. It is even more than the physical training because we want the players to take to the match a strong character.

First win in 10 matches

“We are not in the transfer period where we can change players to bring in the character we want. We can only change their approach and mentality,” he told Soka.

The win over Chemelil Sugar was Vihiga’s first in 10 matches and Okoth is looking at it to fuel the ambition for back to back wins when Bandari tours western Kenya.

He says the fact that his side will be playing title contenders is enough motivation for them.

Bigger team

“The Chemelil win has recharged the boys; it has eliminated the fear of going forward and trying to get goals. I can see the confidence coming back and I believe they are fired up for this match.

“Bandari is a bigger team and by virtue of their position they will be favorites but now again, that is what motivates my players going to the clash. Sometimes it is more comfortable for players in a perceived smaller team playing the bigger sides,” he added.

Heading to the game, 25 points separate the two sides, with Bandari placed third on 49 points and Vihiga 16th on 24.
