After a hard fought 1-0 win over Nzoia Sugar on match day 28 of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL), Ulinzi Stars head coach Benjamin Nyangweso has gone ahead to give props to the millers who he unequivocally feels are the best opponents he has faced since he returned back to the team one month ago.
Nyangweso was reappointed to lead the soldiers in March, returning after a 16 month hiatus from the team and has since been in charge of 11 games, winning five and losing four.
The Nzoia game played Monday 6 May at the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru saw Bernard Ongoma net with an 85th minute header to help end a two game losing streak.
Of the 11 matches played under Nyangweso, Ulinzi have faced off against all the top 5 sides on the standings and have faced league leaders Gor Mahia twice but Nyangweso feels that it is 12th placed Nzoia who have put up the toughest fight of all so far.
“The Nzoia game is one of the toughest games I have been involved in since I took over the team,” Nyangweso said in a video shared on Ulinzi Stars’ social media handles.
“They restricted us from playing the way we normally play and it is because they have plenty of ball players.”
The win saw the soldiers move up to 8th on the KPL log with 39 points and Nyangweso, who led Ulinzi to their most recent title triumph in 2010 is hoping to keep the momentum going for the remaining six games of the season starting with Thursday’s home tie against Posta Rangers.
Though he is unsure whether he will have a full squad with Brian Birgen and Omar Mbongi having suffered injuries in recent outings.
“We will definitely set ourselves differently for the Rangers game. They will be a tough opponent for sure because they are in a precarious position on the wrong end of the table and will be keen to claim the three points. They started the season badly but they have been heading in the right direction recently.
“For the injuries in the team, I do not have a full assessment of the players injured and will have to get feedback from the team doctor but I believe Mbongi could be available because his issue is as a result of the Ramadhan season as he is fasting,” Nyangweso concluded.
