Mandela helps Maritzburg to crucial win towards maintaining PSL status

Harambee Stars defender Brian Mandela was an 88th minute substitute in Maritzburg United’s 1-0 win over Royal Eagles on Sunday 19 May in the two team’s relegation/promotion play-off first-leg fixture played at the Harry Gwala Stadium in South Africa.

Mandela came on for midfielder Siphesihle Ndlovu with two minutes remaining of the 90 as Erick Tinkler’s men looked to see out the win following Thabiso Kutumela’s first half strike.

Former AFC Leopards winger and Ugandan international Allan Kateregga also featured in the game for Maritzburg.

Bottom

Nicknamed The Team of Choice, Maritzburg United finished the regular season second from bottom by virtue of goal difference after being tied at 27 points with bottom side Free State Stars.

This secured the playoffs for them against Royal Eagles and Milano United who finished second and third respectively in the National First Division (Second tier).

The three teams are scheduled to play in a league format with each team playing the other both home and away. The team with the most number of points at the end of it all books their place in next season’s PSL campaign.

Milano next

Eagles defeated Milano in the first game of the playoffs played last week. Maritzburg will next face Milano on Saturday.

Mandela has featured 20 times this season for Maritzburg scoring once. He was named in coach Sebastien Migne’s 30-man provisional squad for the upcoming AFCON tourney in Egypt.
