Gor Mahia are the 2018-19 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions; this despite having played to a 1-1 draw with relegation threatened Vihiga United in a round 32 fixture held at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Wednesday 22 May.
Gor’s unprecedented triumph of league title number 18 was facilitated by Bandari FC’s 0-0 draw with Mathare United at the MISC Kasarani earlier on in the day.
The coastal outfit’s result, meant whatever the outcome against Vihiga, K’Ogalo were assured of this season’s title with two games to spare.
K’Ogalo’s 70 points tally is eight points more than Bandari’s 62 and unassailable after Wednesday’s draw with Vihiga that saw Charles Momanyi and Amos Kigadi exchange headers either side of half time.
Gor came into round 32 needing only two points from their remaining three games to clinch the title and a win would have secured the crown no matter the outcome of Bandari’s game with Mathare.
Vihiga on their part remain with an outside chance of beating the drop after the draw saw them unable to cut a five point gap between them and safety.
The Vihiga County based side remain second from bottom with 26 points.
Sammy Okoth’s charges need to win their remaining two games and hope that Chemelil Sugar and Zoo FC, the two sides above them, falter.
