KCB strike late to pick a point against Ulinzi Stars in Machakos

KCB needed a 90th minute goal to force a 2 – 2 draw against Ulinzi Stars in the Round 33 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) clash staged at the Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos on Sunday 26 May.

A good start from the Bankers saw them take the lead in the 12th minute through Chrispinus Onyango, but Enosh Ochieng rose from the bench to level matter in the 39th minute.

The second half belonged to Ulinzi Stars and after moments of knocking at the Bankers’ door, Churchill Muloma hit a wonder strike in the 70th minute but Ulinzi could not hold on and from a goalmouth melee, Onyango poked in his second of the day to ensure a share of the spoils.

Misses

The opening exchanges of the game saw Kennedy Owino rifle a good chance across the face of goal after a moment of indecision from the Ulinzi Stars defence and as play shifted, KCB keeper Joseph Okoth had to rush off his line to block an Oscar Wamalwa attempt after an error in defence.

In the ninth minute Boniface Onyango got to the end of a well taken delivery after a foul on Brian Birgen but he didn’t make a good connection, injuring himself in the process.

KCB had another good opening minutes later with Owino getting a free header but Ulinzi keeper James Saruni tipped the ball over for a corner which would get the Bankers the opener after Onyango poked home from close range following Bolton Omwenga’s delivery.

Ulinzi push

Wamalwa had the chance to restore parity in the 27th minute after picking a good pass from midfield but he shot straight at the keeper, before Waweru drew a good save from Okoth as Ulinzi pushed.

Sensing the chance, Ulinzi coach Benjamin Nyangweso sent Enosh Ochieng on in the 34th minute, replacing Justin Onwonga, and Enosh needed just five minutes to power home the equalizer after rising to head Elvis Nandwa’s cross.

Second half

In the second half, Ulinzi continued pushing and duly took the lead when Churchill Muloma got to the end of a poor clearance and from 20 yards out he unleashed a ferocious shot that gave Okoth no chance.

It wasn’t to be Ulinzi Stars’ day though as another defensive error came to be too costly when they failed to clear their lines and Onyango was there to slot home his second of the day.

The result sealed a five – game winless run for Ulinzi Stars which left them 11th on the log on 42 points while KCB stays eighth on the log on 44 points.
