Zoo FC are out of the relegation zone; this after they beat 10-man Kakamega Homeboyz 3-2 in a round 33 league tie played at the Kericho Green Stadium on Sunday 26 May a day that saw the complete opposite unfold at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega as hosts Vihiga United’s relegation was confirmed after they fell to a 2-1 loss to Western Stima.
Zoo came into the tie sitting third from bottom on the KPL log and now leapfrog Chemelil Sugar with their survival hopes now firmly in the team’s hands heading into the final round of play.
At a rainy afternoon in Kericho, Zoo turned on the style to down the visitors who took the lead as early as the 3rd minute.
A point above
Derrick Anami scored twice with Danson Chetambe adding the third as Zoo moved out of the drop zone and into 15th place with 32 points, now a point above relegation. The Kericho based side will now need to match Chemelil Sugar’s result on the final day of the season to be assured of their place in next season’s topflight campaign and send the millers to the playoffs.
In Kakamega, Vihiga United were unable to extend their stay in the topflight for a third successive season as they fell to visiting Western Stima and will now finish the season second from bottom.
Goals from Kennedy Owino and Henry Onyango during the last 10 minutes of the game cancelled out Amos Kigadi’s opener.
Vihiga, who lie in 17th place with 26 points, needed a win to try and push their survival hopes to the final day of the season.
They join Mt. Kenya United as the season’s two confirmed casualties.
Elsewhere at the Kasarani Stadium, MKU suffered their seventh straight defeat as they went down 3-0 to Kariobangi Sharks.
Julius Masaba scored his third goal in two games to add onto other strikes from Erick Kapaito and Henry Juma that inspired Sharks to their second victory in 16 outings.
