NSL: Wazito shocker throws promo race wide open

The race for promotion to the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) took an interesting turn on Saturday 1 June, the day when each of the teams in the National Super League took to the pitch with matches spread across the country.

The biggest of them all was the Wazito FC clash against Nairobi Stima, as the top two sides faced off and as it came to pass, league leaders Wazito FC could not secure their place in the top flight on the day as they fell 3 – 5 to Stima on the day, at Camp Toyoyo.

The result now means Wazito’s lead has been cut to just one point, going into the final two matches. Stima close in on second with 74 points.

Unfortunate Fortune

Also seeking a place in the KPL next season, the impressive Kisumu All Stars picked a crucial three points with a 3 – 1 win over Fortune Sacco at the Thika Sub County Stadium.

Alvin Ochieng opened the scoring for the visiting Kisumu side in the 44th minute before a brace from Oroko Jophn in the 57th and 89th minutes secured the points after Sean Opwora had pulled one back for Fortune Sacco in the 80th minute through a penalty.

Kisumu All Stars had to finish the match with 10 men after Hosea Were was sent off in the 75th minute.

Ushuru win

Ushuru FC also pushed on with their promotion agenda with a win at the Coast as they traveled to Mombasa and beat Modern Coast Rangers 2 – 1 at Serani Sports Ground.

Barrack Odhiambo scored for Ushuru in the 17th minute but that was canceled out by George Owiti’s equalizer in the 39th minute. There was no denying the hosts though, as in the 44th minute, they restored the lead through Maurice Odipo, clinching three points to consolidate fourth place, where they are now on 70 points, one shy of third placed All Stars.

City Stars win

Further down the log, Nairobi City Stars did themselves a lot of good in the survival race, with a 2 – 1 win over Kangemi United. City Stars defender Noah Abich continued with his stellar show for the Kawangware side, netting the winner after Robert Ndungu’s equalizer, City Stars having fallen to Bonaventure Atse’s early strike.

In the late kickoff at Thika, former KPL side Thika United fell 1 – 2 to Eldoret Youth to continue sinking towards the drop zone while Shabana FC played to a barren draw with Administration Police at the Gusii Stadium.
