Wazito FC head coach Fred Ambani has declared the club will not go for big – name players as the side prepares for its return to the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) after a season in the National Super League (NSL).
The team sealed top spot in the NSL and subsequent promotion to the top flight on Sunday 9 June with a resounding 7 – 1 win over St. Joseph Youth at Camp Toyoyo and speaking after picking his winner’s medal, the coach said he will keep his trust with a majority of players who served him in the second tier.
He however indicated that a few new faces will be shipped in to bolster areas of weakness observed in the season, as well as to beef up for the much tougher KPL and while at it, he passed his gratitude to the fans and management for the support offered in the season.
“I am very thankful, first to God and then the club and all its stakeholders; it is not easy to join a team and in the first season gain promotion. It has been a sacrifice from all of us and I am very happy to see the team get here.
“As we get to the next phase, my urge is on the players to carry the same spirit, same mentality to the premier league. I will not make big signings, as people think; I will only identify the weak areas and strengthen appropriately.
“If we start bringing the so called big names, we will destabilize the team; I want to trust the players I have used in the NSL to do duty in the KPL and so the changes will be really minimal,” he noted.
Wazito FC got relegated from the KPL at the close of the 2018 season, then under coach Frank Ouna. Ambani will be hoping to steer the team to success in the top flight, especially now that the club has a sense of financial stability.
