Algerian midfielder Haris Belkebla has been dropped from the Desert Foxes squad for the upcoming AFCON tournament after a video of him exposing his rear end surfaced online.
The 25 year old France based midfielder flashed his backside during a live video game on the live stream gaming platform Fortnite as Algerian teammate, goalkeeper Alexandre Oukidja was playing the popular game and live streaming it on Twitch.
“The national team coach Djamel Belmadi has decided to exclude Algeria midfielder Haris Belkebla from the Africa Cup of Nations training camp.
“The coach’s decision was to maintain discipline within the group, which he considers paramount,” reads part of a statement posted by the Algerian FA on Wednesday.
The Brest midfielder was on his part sorry for his antics which have cost him the opportunity to represent his country at the most prestigious tournament in Africa.
“I would like to apologise to you. Of course I did not think I was live on a social network, however, what I did was out of order and has no place in a gathering of such importance,” Belkebla posted on his Insagram handle.
“I do not seek to make excuses for myself because I made a mistake and I am paying the price immediately with my exclusion from the national team.
“I am broken-hearted but it is a legitimate punishment by Algerian football governing bodies. Of course I do not hold a grudge against anyone except myself for disappointing and hurting you.
“I simply ask you to not hold this against my family who have raised me with far more noble values than what I displayed.
Algeria, who are in the same AFCON group as Kenya, Tanzania and Senegal, are yet to name a replacement for Belkebla but it is believed USM Alger’s Mohamed Benkhemassa is the ideal choice.
Coached by former Algerian international Djamel Belmadi, the Desert Foxes will kick off their tournament against Kenya on June 23rd at the June 30 Stadium in Cairo Egypt.
