The Burundi national team, Swallows, is set for its first ever taste of continental football at the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt, and heading there, head coach Olivier Niyungeko has announced his final squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals taking place in Egypt.
Sadio Berahino, who until May was attached to Stoke City in the Championship in England, has been included in the team after attaining Burundian nationality, having earlier played for England at the junior level.
In the team, there are also places for Sofapaka keeper Justin Ndikumana and former Kakamega Homeboyz keeper Arthur Arakaza. Former Gor Mahia man, Karim Nizigiyimana and former Sofapaka forward Fiston Abdoul Razak are also in.
At AFCON, Burundi will be in Group B and will open their campaign against Nigeria on Saturday 22 June then later take on Madagascar and Guinea in the otehr group matches.
They will face Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles in a friendly match on Monday 17 June before departing for Alexandria, Egypt.
Burundi finished ahead of South Sudan and Gabon in the qualification stage’s Group C to qualify along with Mali who led the group.
