Kenyan Premier League returnees Wazito Football Club have made good their promise to rope in top talent in Kenya’s top flight before the 2019-20 season commences.
Wazito, the 2019 National Super League champions, have signed Sony Sugar FC’s Derrick Otanga, a Gor Mahia target as recent as Friday 14 June.
Speaking to Soka, the striker indeed confirmed that he was now a Wazito FC man.
Best to take
”I have signed for Wazito Football Club,” he said. ”They offered me a good deal and after thinking about it and consulting my closest friends and family, I thought it was the best one to take.”
Otanga ended the 2018-19 KPL season placed fifth on the top scorers’ charts with 13 goals, seven behind Golden Boot winner Enosh Ochieng of Ulinzi Stars. It was just his second season in the top flight.
KPL champions Gor had been seen as firm favorites to snap up Sony’s golden boy with reports indicating that Coach Hassan Oktay was interested in having him in his squad next season.
Gor Mahia interest
Speaking to Soka in a previous interview, Gor CEO Mr. Lordvick Aduda confirmed this interest.
”The coach did show interest in Otanga; that’s a fact. However, he is not in the country at the moment and he is the one to give us the go-ahead,” Aduda has said in the past.
Otanga has previously played for Naivas FC in the FKF Division One League – Kenya’s third tier.
