Five time African champions TP Mazembe have confirmed that they will be taking part at this year’s CECAFA Kagame Cup to increase the number of teams already to have confirmed their participation at the regional tournament to 10.
Mazembe join Zambia’s Zesco United and fellow Congolese rivals AS Vita as the guest teams at this year’s tournament to be hosted by Rwanda from July 6th to the 21st.
Other teams to have confirmed their participation are defending champions Azam FC (Tanzania), Gor Mahia, Bandari FC, KCCA (Uganda) and Rwandese trio of Rayon Sport, Mukura Sports and APR.
Mazembe last graced the regional tourney back in 2010, in Rwanda, but had a disgraceful ending as they were thrown out of the competition following skipper Tresor Mputu’s attack on the referee in the game against APR FC.
The addition of the three guest teams offsets the pulling out of Burundian champions Aigle Noir FC and the Tanzania duo of Yanga FC and Simba SC who all cited logistic reasons including the unavailability of key players for the tournament, as it will be running concurrently with the AFCON showpiece, where several of the teams’ players will be in action.
The winner of this year’s showpiece will walk away with a USD 30,000 (Kshs 3m) cash prize.
Azam defeated Simba 2-1 in last year’s final to register the team’s first ever regional title.
