Kenya is set to take on Algeria on Sunday 23 June in the two nations’ opening match of the ongoing AFCON finals in Egypt and head coach Sebastien Migne has named the squad that will line up in the country’s first match at the continental stage in 15 years.
The squad has been blighted by injury to the defensive unit with the latest being that of Joash Onyango who was earlier on Sunday ruled out of tonight’s game against the Desert Foxes and possibly the rest of Harambee Stars’ games in Group C.
The injuries have forced the Frenchman to start Zambia based Musa Mohammed who has been nursing an injury picked up two weeks ago in Stars’ friendly against Madagascar. Musa has been one of Migne’s preferred choices at centreback.
He lines up against U23 captain Joseph Okumu at the heart of defence with Philemon Otieno and Aboud Omar martialing the flanks.
Okumu was introduced as a second half substitute for Musa in the Madagascar game and also went on to feature for the full 90 in Kenya’s next friendly against DR Congo.
In midfield, captain Victor Wanyama forms a two-man pivot together with Sofapaka’s Dennis Odhiambo with Sweden based Eric Johanna playing just in front of them in a roaming role.
Francis Kahata and Ayub Timbe will be on the flanks supporting lone striker Michael Olunga.
Below is the squad;
Starting XI: Patrick Matasi (GK), Philemon Otieno, Musa Mohammed, Joseph Okumu, Aboud Omar, Dennis Odhiambo, Victor Wanyama (C), Francis Kahata, Erick Johanna, Ayub Timbe, Michael Olunga.
