Soka can reliably confirm that Harambee Stars will be without defender Joash Onyango for their opening Group C encounter against Algeria scheduled for Sunday 23 June at the ongoing AFCON finals in Egypt after the Gor Mahia man suffered an ankle injury in training on Saturday.
It is devastating news for the team whose defensive cover has been stretched to the max with injury.
Brian Mandela was ruled out of the tournament in its entirety with a knee injury while Zambia based Musa Mohammed has been in a race against time to be ready after he too went down with injury two weeks ago after Stars’ friendly against Madagascar.
Joash’s injury, which could see him miss the whole of the group stage matches, now leaves head coach Sebastien Migne with four options at center-back they include U23 captain Joseph Okumu, veteran David Calabar Owino, Vihiga United man Bernard Ochieng and Musa.
Before the injury bug struck, the French tactician had preferred a central defence partnership of Mandela and Musa with Joash coming in whenever one of them was not available.
He featured twice in the qualifiers, both games against Ghana alongside Musa who was the only constant in defence throughout the qualifiers.
Stars qualified for this year’s edition with one of the meanest defence which only conceded once.
Stars are in Group C alongside CECAFA rivals Tanzania. Algeria and Senegal are the other teams in the group.
