Kenya’s third game at the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), against Senegal on Monday 1 July comes with a lot at stake, with Harambee Stars eyeing a place in the second round, and midfielder Johanna Omollo says they are ready to face Africa’s best ranked team.
Kenya have three points from the opening two matches and avoiding defeat against Senegal, who have the same number of points will prove a big step towards the team’s ambitions.
Omollo is keen on being part of the first Kenyan team to qualify for the AFCON knockout stages and says doing it against Senegal carries a lot of importance. He didn’t rule out the role of the team’s fans in the race.
“The fans are really encouraging us and telling us it is possible, which we believe as well and we are excited for tomorrow. Our motivation is to try and write history for Kenya and also playing a team like Senegal is a privilege and we are also excited to take them on,” he said.
Omollo scored in the 3-2 win over Tanzania on Match Day 2, which kept Kenya’s hopes alive at the tournament and he is expected to play a key role again in the Senegal game.
“I am happy to have played a small part in the last game; to have scored a goal, but we were very happy for the victory,” he added.
The match will be staged at the June 30 Stadium in Cairo starting 10pm EAT and will be played at the same time as Algeria versus Tanzania in the other match in the group.
