The Kenya national team Harambee Stars is faced with a daunting task later on Monday 1 July, in the third game of Group C at the 2019 AFCON, against the top ranked nation in Africa – Senegal. Head coach Sebastien Migne, with a number of injured players available, is set to have a selection headache for the clash at the June 30 Stadium in Cairo.
Up until in the afternoon on the eve of the game, the coach had a fully fit squad to choose from but reports from camp indicate that defender Erick Ouma picked an injury in training on Sunday 30 June and could be out ot of the game.
Ouma’s absence here could be a massive blow for the coach, given his performance in the opening two matches. This leaves the coach with Abud Omar as the other option for the left back position.
The good news for the coach though, will be the availability of defenders Joash Onyango and Philemon Otieno as well as midfielder Dennis Odhiambo, all who have recovered from injuries picked earlier on.
Among the changes the coach is expected to make for the game may see Eric Johanna return to the starting team after his introduction in the second half against Tanzania, which saw him go on to provide an assist for the winning goal.
Matasi to start
In another change, Odhiambo could be deployed in midfield to help shield the defence along with skipper Victor Wanyama and while a number of fans have been calling for goalkeeper Patrick Matasi to be dropped, it is unlikely Migne will heed this call.
At the heart of defence, despite Joash’s return, it is highly unlikely that Migne will want to tamper with his central defence pairing of Joseph Okumu and Musa Mohamed.
Probable Starting XI: Patrick Matasi (GK), Philemon Otieno, Joseph Okumu, Musa Mohamed, Abud Omar, Victor Wanyama (c), Dennis Odhiambo, Johanna Omollo, Eric Johanna, Ayub Timbe, Michael Olunga.
