Defending African champions Cameroon are out of the ongoing AFCON finals after losing 3-2 to Nigeria in a blockbuster round of 16 tie played on Saturday 6 July at the Alexandria Stadium.
A match worthy of being a final saw three time African champs Nigeria comeback to secure the win with Arsenal winger Alex Iwobi scoring the winner in the 66th minute to add on to Odion Ighalo’s brace that had levelled the scores for the Super Eagles after Cameroon had taken the lead at halftime thanks to goals from Stephane Bahoken and Clinton Njie.
Ighalo had a standout game and was named Man of The Match as aside from his two goals he also assisted Iwobi’s winner. The veteran forward now leads the race to claim the golden boot gong with three goals to his name after he also netted in Nigeria’s opening group match against Burundi.
Senegal’s Sadio Mane, who netted a brace in the group stages against Kenya, also has three goals to his name.
Nigeria will now await the winner of Egypt vs South Africa match to know who they will face in the quarters.
Tournament dark horses Benin, who eliminated much fancied Morocco in a penalty shootout on Friday are to face Senegal in the quarters. The Teranga Lions edged Uganda 1-0 also on Friday.
