The 42nd edition of the regional club championship the CECAFA Kagame Cup kicked off on Saturday 6 July in Rwanda with home side APR and guest side Green Eagles claiming wins in the two matches that were played at the Kigali Stadium.
In the first game of the double header at the ground, Zambian side Green Eagles, one of three guest teams at the tournament, got the ball rolling with a 2-0 win over Heegan FC of Somalia. Kennedy Musonda and Spencer Sautu scored the goals.
The win sends The Eagles to the top of Group C ahead of APR, who defeated Proline FC of Uganda 1-0 in the second game, on goal difference.
Thierry Manzi scored a stoppage time winner to deny the Ugandan side an impressive point against one of the tournament’s favourites.
Four matches will be played on Sunday with Bandari FC going up against KCCA of Uganda at the Huye Stadium starting from 1PM local time.
Bandari are in Group B together with KCCA, Mukura Sports (Rwanda) and defending champions Azam FC (Tanzania).
Mukura and Azam will do battle at the same ground also, preceding the Bandari game.
Group A will also be activated on Sunday. Rayon Sports (Rwanda) will be up against TP Mazembe (DRC) in arguably the highlight clash of the day at the Kigali Stadium with the group’s other game seeing KMC (Tanzania) up against Atlabara (South Sudan).
Kenya’s other representative, Gor Mahia will be in action on Monday against AS Maniema Union (DRC) from 3:30PM.
