South Africa have produced the shock of the ongoing AFCON tournament by dumping out hosts Egypt in the last 16 round courtesy of a smash and grab 1-0 win at the Cairo International Stadium on Saturday 6 July.
Orland Pirates’ attacking midfielder Thembinkosi Lorch scored the all-important goal with five minutes left to play, producing a composed finish from just inside the area as The Pharaoh’s were caught at the back by a devastating counter attack.
The 25 year old, who is the reigning league MVP in SA, marked his tournament debut in style with the goal as well as a Man of The Match performance.
He has been an unused sub in SA’s three group games and only came to the fold due to Themba Zwane’s suspension.
Baxter’s men, who won only one of their three group games and reached the knockout round as one of the four best 3rd place teams, will now face Nigeria in the quarter finals. Nigeria defeated defending champions Cameroon in the earlier kickoff on Saturday.
On Friday, Benin, also one of the 3rd best placed teams, produced another shocker by dumping out Morocco on post-match penalties.
The round will continue on Sunday with debutants Madagascar taking on another 3rd placed team in DR Congo from 7PM local time with Algeria and Guinea closing off the day’s action with the late kickoff from 10PM.
