Gor Mahia were 2-1 victors over AS Maniema of the DRC, in the two teams’ first match of the ongoing CECAFA Kagame Cup championships, held on Monday 8 July at the Umuganda Stadium in Gisenyi Rwanda.
Goals in each half from Wellington Ochieng (20’) and Boniface Omondi (50’) had Gor sailing to a comfortable win but some sluggish defending near the end of the match allowed their Congolese opponents to pull one back via a Dennis Likwera penalty with eight minutes left on the clock.
Gor would however hold out for the win as head coach Hassan Oktay gave minutes to some of his new recruits.
Tobias Otieno signed from Sony Sugar started and played 82 minutes to mark his debut and so did Dennis Oalo and Dickson Ambundo, signed from NSL side Nairobi Stima and Alliance FC of Tanzania respectively. Both players came on in the second half.
Maniema were added to this year’s roster last minute after DC Motema Pemba, also of the DRC, opted out of the tournament just two days before it kicked off.
The win has the five time CECAFA champions in second place in Group D, tied on three points with Djiboutian outfit AS Ports who brashed aside KMKM of Zanzibar 2-0 also on Monday.
Gabriel Dadzie netted a brace with a goal either side of half time and now leads the scoring charts with two goals.
Four matches were played on Monday, with Group C, which kicked off the tournament on Saturday, activating match day 2.
Home side and favourites APR continued with their 100% start with a 1-0 win over Zambian side Green Eagles at the Kigali Stadium.
Borface Sunzu scored an own goal after an hour to grant APR their second win that sends them to the top of Group C with six points ahead of Green Eagles and Proline of Uganda who have three points each.
Proline who lost to APR on the opening day by a solitary goal, defeated Heegan FC 2-0 to send them crushing out of the tournament as the first casualties. The Somali outfit also lost by a similar scoreline to Green Eagles on the opening day.
Ocean Okiror and Mustafa Mujuzi got the goals for the UPL side.
Four more matches will be played on Tuesday with another Kenyan representative, Bandari FC, taking on local side Mukura Sports at the Huye Stadium in Butare from 1PM local time.
Bandari played to a 1-1 draw with Ugandan side KCCA on Sunday and lie in second place in B behind leaders and defending champions Azam FC, who defeated Mukura 1-0 also on Sunday.
