KPL title declared the top target at AFC Leopards in 2019/20 campaign

By the time the 2018/19 season came to a close, in May, AFC Leopards had clocked a good 21 years without lifting the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) title. As the team gears for the 2019/20 season, this is a stat head coach Casa Mbungo is keen on changing.

The Rwandese tactician will be hoping to take the team through its first full season, having joined midway through the 2018/19 campaign and he is keen on seeing a successful close to it.

Below par

In the past season, under his watch, the team managed an 11th placed finish, which he understandably branded below par, and with the team set to participate in the SportPesa Shield and KPL, he has placed the league title as a top target.

“Last season we didn’t do so well; we finished 11th and so now we are preparing with a keen interest on winning one of the two trophies for which we will be playing but the biggest objective is to win the league.

“AFC Leopards is a giant; the team used to win titles in the gone years and I hope what I have done out there with other teams, can be replicated here,” he says on the club’s YouTube channel.

Transfer activity

In trying to get the team back to the glory days, the coach has done some culling to the team, releasing eight players and he is looking to beef up accordingly in the coming days.

He says with good support from the management, the team will do much better than in the past seasons.

“In the team at the moment, we have 19 players and I am looking at beefing up with six or seven more. We need to bolster the defence with around two players, two midfield players, two strikers and a goalkeeper.

“With the players we currently have and the expected new signings plus support from the team management, I believe we will do better than last season,” he added.

The team will open its campaign against Kakamega Homeboyz, a team that has lately become a bogey side for Ingwe. Leopards have managed just one win over Homeboyz in the last seven meetings.
