Gor Mahia will be without midfield anchorman Ernest Wendo for the team’s CECAFA Kagame Cup quarter-final match-up against Zambian side Green Eagles scheduled for Wednesday 17 July after the player earned his second yellow card of the tournament in K’Ogalo’s final group game against KMKM of Zanzibar played on Sunday.
Gor won the game 1-0 courtesy of a late Eric Ombija header to top Group D and set up the quarter-final clash against the guest Zambian side who finished second in Group C.
Wendo’s absence is a big blow for Hassan Oktay’s men but one they are capable of managing with the likes of new signing Tobias Otieno and Ugandan enforcer Hashim Sempala all available for selection.
The game, which is the first of a planned double header at the Kigali Stdium, is set for a 4PM CAT kickoff. The late kickoff will see home favourites APR take on Congolese outfit AS Maniema, the other remaining guest team of the three that were invited.
Maniema finished second in Group D behind Gor while APR topped Group C ahead of Green Eagles.
A win for either Gor or Green Eagles will set up a semi-final clash against Ugandan champions KCCA who produced a shocker by defeating local favourites Rayon Sport on Tuesday.
In the other quarter-final match-up, the winner there will face off against defending champions Azam FC who romped past TP Mazembe also on Tuesday.
