Okoth reflects on 6 years at Stima after Tusker switch

Kelvin Okoth first made his Kenyan Premier League (KPL) appearance in the colours of former club Western Stima FC briefly after finishing school in 2012. Now, after six years at the Kisumu based side, Okoth heads to the capital in search of a silverware and 2016 champions Tusker Football Club will be his hope for one.

In an interview with Soka after a training session with the Ruaraka based side, Okoth talks of an accommodating environment at the Brewers, a place he terms conducive for a silverware.

”I have trained for three weeks with Tusker and I can say it hasn’t been hard to settle. They are people who knew me before and most of the players I have played with them before,” says the attacking midfielder who would have in fact moved to Tusker before the start of last season.

The former Green Commandos prodigy is confident of helping the club regain its lost glory in the recent years by claiming an accolade at the end of the season. It’s different here, he says, from the way the coaches handle training sessions to little conversations within the playing unit.

”It’s a big club, and even when you hear the coach talking, he says we are not participants in the league. We have to win something,” he adds.

His journey to where he is right now, however, hasn’t been all too rosy, shipped in straight from Kakamega High School by then Stima coach Francis Baraza, Okoth would have to battle seasoned names for playtime, eventually earning his first start against SoNy Sugar under coach Henry Omino in Mumias.

He thanks the club for the growth.

”Stima was home to me, they took me in and had belief in me, gave me trust and a long contract until I was ripe enough. I thank them a lot,” continues the forward.

The Kisumu Powermen look to have moved on from his departure with a massive loot in the transfer period. Stima, known for going already seasoned names, have roped in youngsters Abdallah Chamberi, Henry Juma, Fidel Origa and Chapa Dimba na Safaricom star Ibrahim Ochieng- almost at no cost.

Okoth, on the other hand, has his Brewers side up against defending champions Gor Mahia FC as their opening match in the 2019-20 KPL season, a match K’Ogalo play host. The match will be played on September 1st at the Machakos stadium.
