Dogo, Engesha braces highlight Mumias thriller as Airo leads Golden Boot race

Kenya Women Premier League fans were treated to a six-goal thriller at the Mumias Sports Complex when holders Vihiga Queens faced off with former champions Thika Queens on Sunday 21 July.

A 3-3 draw, the result only served to stall the two giants’ surge towards another title as this season’s title challengers Trans Nzoia Falcons and Gaspo Youth all won.

Thika opened the scoring proceedings early in the game, in the sixth minute, but Terry Engesha drew level for the hosts at the half-hour mark. Mwanahalima Dogo Adam reclaimed Thika’s lead just a minute after Terry’s goal, however.

In the second half, Topistar Nafula, assist provider for Terry’s early equalizer, continued her provision prowess, this time, for Shilwatso Cynthia for 2-2 in the 62nd minute. With 15 minutes to play, Terry Engesha completed her brace, sending the hosts 3-2 up, a lead for Alex Alumirah’s charges for the first time in the match.

The champions could have held on, and bagged three precious points against a fellow title contender, but Mwanahalima was not done yet, firing in for 3-3 with just six minutes to play.

Kisumu All Starlets’ Mercy Airo Akinyi stretched her lead at the top of the Kenya Women’s Premier League scorers’ log with yet another goal – the solitary goal in fact, in Starlets’ 1-0 win over visiting Eldoret Falcons on Saturday 19 July, at the Moi Stadium.

Airo, recently called up to the national team Harambee Starlets, broke camp alongside two of her teammates Bertha Omita and Cynthia Atieno when league matches resumed and made the most of it, ensuring Starlets completed a double over the Eldoret side.
