The refereeing fraternity in the country registered another massive step on Thursday 8 August with the certification of 177 new referees upon completion of a five day course in Machakos under the watch of the Football Kenya Federation’s Southern Branch.
Headed by the FKF Southern Branch Chairman, Anthony Makau, the course brought together referees from Kajiado, Embu, Isiolo and Makueni as well as Migori and Vihiga.
With the expectation being to have them join in running the country’s leagues, Makau assured during their certification that they will get placements in the branch leagues.
“This referees training exercise is part of our campaign promise before we came into office. I am happy to report that we have successfully empowered match officials as well as coaches at the grass-root level, which is a positive step in our football development.
“These newly trained referees will be given a chance to practice what they have learned when our Branch Leagues kick off next month, and it’s our hope that some will rise to become FIFA Referees,” Makau said.
FKF Deputy President Doris Petra, who was present at the event, reiterated the federation’s commitment to such programs as she assured on continued support to improve grassroot football.
