Kisumu All Stars edged Vihiga United by a solitary goal in a pre-season friendly match played at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu from 9 am early today morning. Gearing up for the two top leagues in the country’s football hierarchy, the two regional rivals locked horns having swapped placed in the top tier Kenyan Premier League and the second-tier National Super League.
The first half of the tie was a drab affair- with Vihiga United looking likely to pull a goal in the opening 45. Nothing was to however come and only Lawrence Luvanda’s 35th-minute effort tested All Stars keeper Geoffrey Were in goal.
The second half saw both coaches- Henry Omino and Sammy Okoth, summon their first teams all in search of an opening goal in the match.
The tides would change, however, with the home side All Stars looking the more threatening side in the opening exchanges of the first stanza.
Eric Otieno set up Stephen Otieno in the 50th minute for an easy tap-in but the former SoNy Sugar man saw his effort go wide. Next up was Michael Owino, in All Stars’ central attack with a header right into the palms of Vihiga United keeper Morgan Aluube.
At the hour mark, Shadrack Omondi was not going to miss after finding Alube off of his line and All Stars led 1-0.
Coach Sammy Okoth’s charges found few openings in the second half and even then, could not turn in those. Murunga Andrew’s feeble shot did little to trouble John Otieno.
The match’s denouement had Johnstone Muyesu fire in a long-range effort in a bid to level things up but this, the match’s last piece of action- went over the bar.
