Kenyan international makes debut for Slovakian PL newbies

Kenyan U23 international Yusuf Mainge, made his long awaited debut for FK Pohronie of Slovakia on Wednesday 14 August, when he came on as a second half substitute in the team’s dominant 9-0 thumping of Selce in a second round fixture of the Slovak Cup.

The young defender, who joined Pohronie on a 3 year deal from AFC Leopards, got valuable minutes to impress for his new side who were for the very first time promoted to the Slovakian top tier – Fortuna Liga –  for the 2019-20 season.

The rightback, landed in the Eastern European nation earlier this week and went straight to the matchday squad for the cup game.

Thank you note

In a Facebook post after the game, Mainge thanked Leopards who scouted him from Kakamega High School and gave him the platform to showcase his qualities in 2018.

“Let me start by thanking the Almighty God for the far He has brought me and the wonderful things He has done to me,” part of the post read.

“That said, may I take this opportunity to thank AFC Leopards for the belief they had in me. With no KPL experience they picked me straight from school and drafted me straight to the first team.”

Pohronie will be hoping that Wednesday’s massive win kickstarts a positive streak in the league where they have claimed only one win from their opening four matches and lie 9th in the 12 team division.
