Gor Mahia kicked off the 2019-20 domestic season on the right footing as they edged out Bandari FC 1-0 in the 2019-20 KPL Super Cup held at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Sunday 18 August.
A Lawrence Juma deflected shot in the 64th minute proved the decisive kick that gives new K’Ogalo head coach Steven Polack his first trophy since being appointed as Hassan Oktay’s successor two weeks ago.
The game also saw new signing Tobias Otieno see red with quarter of an hour remaining to play after being booked twice.
The game, pitting last season’s KPL winners against the FKF Shield champions, saw few talking points as both sides were restricted to bit part attacking forays. Perhaps as a result of their upcoming continental ties in the CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup as both coaches tinkered a bit with their squads.
Polack benched last season’s club top scorer Nicholas Kipkirui, opting to give new signing Francis Afriye his K’Ogalo debut while his counterpart Bernard Mwalala, had Kenyan international Hassan Abdallah also on the bench.
Both teams played to similar 0-0 results in their first-leg continental ties.
