Venue change for Kenya – Malawi tie; match to be played behind closed doors

The Moi International Sports Center (MISC) Kasarani is not going to be available for the game pitting the Kenya women national team, Harambee Starlets against their Malawian counterparts on Sunday 1 September.

The faceoff between the two nations in the 2020 Olympic Games qualifiers has thus been moved to the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos but since the facility is not approved for continental matches by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), it will be played without fans.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) reveals that it got a letter to that effect from CAF, confirming the use of Kenyatta Stadium.

Temporary use

“Concerning the request received on the 1st of August 2019 in order to temporarily use Machakos Stadium for the matches involving Gor Mahia FC (CAF CL Preliminaries) on 24th/25th August 2019 and the Senior National Women Team (Olympics Qualifiers) on 1st September 2019, please note that CAF decided to approve your request.

“However, due to the fact that the stadium is not an approved stadium, please note that both matches must be played behind closed doors,” noted the letter, signed by CAF Deputy General Secretary, Football and Development, Anthony Baffoe.

Malawi will host Kenya in the opening clash of the two legged tie, on Wednesday 28 August in Lilongwe.
