Four – time Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Ulinzi Stars started their 2019/20 campaign in fine fashion as they blanked out newly promoted side Kisumu All Stars 2 – 0 at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu on Saturday 31 August.
The score line in the game was set in a span of just five minutes after Enosh Ochieng fired in two goals right after the break to give the visitors a commanding lead that they held on to the close of the match.
A cagey first half saw very little action in the way of goal as a compact Kisumu All Stars defence frustrated the visitors but that was also aided by profligacy by the Ulinzi Stars forward line.
Bernard Ongoma, Ulinzi’s skipper for the day should have given the visitors the lead in the 19th minute after being picked out unmarked, by Daniel Waweru but his header sailed straight to the side net.
Ongoma would later miss narrowly with a free kick past a despairing dive from home keeper Anthony Obonyo. Oscar Wamalwa too had a good opening before the break but could only manage a feeble shot at the keeper.
On the other end, Ulinzi Stars were only troubled by a Jeconiah Ogendo cross searching for Maxwell Onyango, which keeper Timothy Odhiambo came out well to punch clear.
At the start of the second half, Ulinzi went to attack with purpose and just 40 seconds in, they were 1 – 0 up. Elvis Nandwa picked a forward ball and set himself through well before powering a low shot that was punched by Obonyo.
The spilled ball met an onrushing Enoch who fired in low off the post for the opener.
The second goal came just five minutes later, this time Wamalwa being the provider after racing in well and keeping his cool to float in a cross for the unmarked Enosh Ochieng, who headed well past a flat – footed Obonyo.
The win takes Ulinzi Stars to the top of the standings ahead of the other games over the weekend.
