Kakamega Homeboyz started their 2019-20 KPL season off with a win as they sealed a slim 1-0 victory over AFC Leopards at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega on Sunday 1 September.
New signing Stephen Etyang popped up in the 85th minute to give Homeboyz all three points in a match that was characterized by missed chances especially from the hosts.
The clash saw all two teams give debuts to some of their off-season acquisitions with Leopards fielding from the start six new signings while Homeboyz kept faith with a huge percentage of last season’s squad and only started two of their new recruits.
One of them was winger Etyang who delivered the decisive kick with five minutes left on the clock. The former Nzoia Sugar player struck with what looked like a cross initially from the left side but one that turned to be an attempt at goal which beat Ugandan shotstopper Benjamin Ochan.
Before that the game was characterized by missed chances with the hosts calpable of missing sitters one of which could have seen another new signing, Shami Kibwana, break the deadlock for Homeboyz with just less than five minutes of coming on in the second half.
The former KCB, Thika United and Leopards winger, could have given his team the lead just 10 minutes after the restart but his well angled attempt that beat an onrushing Ochan, was cleared off the line by Robert Mudenyu, to keep the scores level.
Leopards looked shaky and disjointed throughout the match perhaps due to the fact that head coach Andre Casa Mbungo had started with four players making their KPL debut.
One of whom was Malian striker Ismail Diarra who played as the lone striker upfront. Leopards’ forward forays were minimal with the most of them falling to Diarra who could not quite get his accuracy on point.
In the other game of the day, played at the Kericho Green Stadium, hosts Zoo FC also claimed all three points in a 3-1 win over Chemelil Sugar.
The game sprung into life in the second stanza as goals from Kepha Ondati, Derrick Anami and substitute Newton Ondari settled it with Rashid Athuman grabbing a consolation for the millers off the bench.
