Record Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia begun their quest for a 19th league crown in the most dominant of ways by thumping fellow title favourites Tusker FC 5-2 in the two teams’ opening round fixture of the new 2019-20 season to send a clear marker that they will not be relinquishing the title, they have won in succession for the last three seasons, with ease.
The win is the largest that has been produced thus far but to Tusker head coach Robert Matano, the scoreline was down to his team granting easy goals to their opponents and not the superiority of Gor Mahia.
“We conceded easy goals today,” Matano said after the game, “We lacked in concentration and experience in the defence and we were punished.
“Poor marking, poor cooperation in the defence cost us this game. We gave them the goals, Gor only scored one goal and it was through (Kenneth) Muguna the rest of the goals we gave them away.”
Starting the season as captain, Muguna produced arguably a man of the match performance with two goals and an assist, his second goal and Gor’s fourth of the evening saw the midfielder pick his spot with a well drilled shot from the edge of the area after being found by the marauding Wellington Ochieng.
The goal though, was not the pick of the bunch as Tusker’s Boniface Muchiri scored two goals that will sure be in the running for goal of the season.
The attacking midfielder who finished as Tusker’s top scorer last season with 12 goals, picked up where he left off with two sublime goals, one a left footed shot from just outside the area and the other, which had Tusker level at 2-2, a long range belter from 30 yards out.
Matano praised the former Sony Sugar man for his showing but insisted that his team need to improve if they are to achieve their targets this season.
“We move on from this defeat. Our shortcomings were exposed and we need to work on them. I also hope to have the other players who were not available for today’s game like Humphrey Mieno available. We need to improve and respond quickly,” he said.
The international break could not have come at a better time for Tusker who will use the off time to put in some work. After the break they face Mathare United while Gor Mahia will face Algeria’s USM Alger in the first-leg of their CAF CL final round qualifier.
