Third friendly for Stars to be played in Nairobi in October

Harambee Stars will play host to Mozambique in October in the last of three friendlies that have been lined up for the team to help prepare for the AFCON 2021 Qualifiers that will kick off in November.

Stars will begin their preparations against Uganda in Nairobi on Sunday 8 September before playing Libya (in Morocco) and Mozambique back to back on the 11th and 15th of October.

FKF president Nick Mwendwa had announced in August the first two friendlies as well as confirming that the federation was working round the clock to add a third friendly for head coach Francis Kimanzi to help him have adequate preparations as he begins his third stint in charge of the team.

“…we have lined up two friendly matches to help the coach prepare his team. The first will be against Uganda on the 8th of September here in Nairobi with the other being against Libya on the 11th of October, to be played probably in Tunisia or Morocco. We are also in the process of lining up a third friendly to be played after the game against Libya on the 15th but there is nothing tangible as yet but we remain hopeful as we want to be active in both those international windows,” Mwendwa said during Kimanzi’s unveiling last month.

And as he faced the press on Thursday after Stars’ open training session ahead of the Uganda game, Kimanzi confirmed that his charges will face off against the Mambas as he sought to explain the unavailability of some of the team’s senior members for Sunday’s game.

Big number

“We are missing a big number of players that were at the AFCON finals and it is not because we did not call them up but it is because they are sorting some issues with their respective clubs and we respect that.

“But we have two more matches against Libya and Mozambique before we play our first qualifier so the door is still open for them to come back to the team,” he said.

Kenya last played Mozambique as recently as 2017 where the team, then under Stanley Okumbi, claimed a 1-1 draw away in Maputo courtesy of a long range effort from Eric Johanna.

Stars will begin their journey to return back to the continental stage against Egypt on the 11th of November away in Cairo.

Kenya was placed in Group G of the qualifiers which also has Comoros and Togo.
