Shabana – MKU claim first wins of the season

Shabana FC and Mt Kenya United bounced back from their opening weekend losses to claim identical 2-1 wins on Sunday 8 September as the National Super League (NSL) entered round 2.

Shabana defeated debutants Murang’a Seal at the Gusii Stadium while MKU claimed the spoils at the Ruaraka grounds against visiting Coast Stima.

Five matches were scheduled for Sunday to conclude the round that had commenced on Saturday but only four of the five matches were played with the match pitting Vihiga Bullets against Nairobi City Stars in Mumias being abandoned at half time and rescheduled for Monday after heavy downpour.

Cash-strapped

After a 2-0 loss away to City Stars on the opening day, cash-strapped Shabana dug deep in front of their own fans to claim their first win of the season courtesy of goals from Abou Traore and Philbert Ochieng, who both struck either side of half time to render Wilson Kamau’s equalizer right before half time a consolation.

The three points lift Shabana from the relegation zone and into 10th on the log.

After falling back to the second tier after three seasons in the top, MKU (formerly Nakumatt), readdressed their shortcomings that saw them suffer a 3-0 loss away to Bidco United on matchday 1 as they claimed all three points against their coastal opponents.

Former Nakumatt striker Joshua Oyoo gave the visitors the lead in the 26th minute but a more determined showing in the second stanza saw the hosts equalize and take the lead in the space of two second half minutes.

Killer blow

Former Kariobangi Sharks striker Musa Ekai restored parity in the 62nd minute before former Kenyan international John Njoroge provided the killer blow in the 64th minute.

MKU who were sitting second bottom before the round commenced, now move up to 11th.

In Awendo, hosts Migori Youth lost 2-0 to Bidco United to remain rooted at the bottom of the standings while Vihiga United and Talanta FC played to a share of the spoils in a 0-0 stalemate.
