Four Kenyan internationals plying their trades abroad will be in action this coming weekend as the final qualifying round for the 2019/20 CAF Champions League group stage takes centre stage with the first-leg match-ups.
Zesco United trio of Jesse Were, David Owino and Teddy Akumu will be hoping to get minutes when the Zambian side travel away to face Tanzania’s Yanga FC while Masoud Juma of JS Kabilye will hope to line-up for the Algerian outfit when they play hosts to Guinea’s Horoya. Both matches are scheduled for Saturday 14 September.
The round could have seen more internationals take part had custodian Faruk Shikalo been registered in time by new club Yanga. The shotstopper moved to the Tanzanian heavyweights after the AFCON tourney but will now await Yanga’s progression either in the CL or Confederations Cup to make his debut in continental club football.
The former Bandari, Posta Rangers and Muhoroni Youth player made his official debut for Yanga in a competitive fixture in the league opening loss to Ruvu Shooting last week.
Zesco have named a 19-man travelling party that will leave Zambia for Tanzania on Wednesday with the three Kenyan stars including Were, who was injured in the season opening league win over Zanaco and forced to sit out Kenya’s friendly against Uganda this past weekend, named in the squad.
The former Tusker man was among the goals as Zesco sealed the Yanga tie with victory over Green Mamba of Eswatini in the previous round
There is also space for former Sofapaka forward Umaru Kasumba who joined the defending Zambian champions after the conclusion of last season’s KPL on a free.
Over to Algeria and where Masoud Juma will be hoping to lead the attack when Kabilye host Horoya. The former Kariobangi Sharks man joined the Algerian side also after this year’s AFCON and has featured in all three of the side’s league fixtures this season where they have won two and drawn the other to lie joint top.
