Gicheru transitions from team captain at Wazito to CEO

Wazito FC have appointed Dennis Gicheru as the club’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) with the defender being elevated from his position as team captain.

Gicheru is currently recuperating from a knee injury he suffered at the tail end of last season and is expected to be out for at least the first-half of the season. It is this situation that has prompted the hierarchy at the club to make the bold move and appoint the former KCB man to the position, which according to club president Ricardo Badoer, he can hold if he decides against returning to the pitch after he recovers.

“As part of our policy of nurturing and exposing talents outside the realm of active football play, we wish to confirm that the club has appointed Dennis Gicheru as the club CEO effective immediately as he recovers and recuperates from his injury,” Badoer is quoted as saying on Wazito’s official portal.

Dennis Gicheru is in his second stint at Wazito FC

“Let it be noted that the club has given him the option to either pursue his football career once he recovers or to fully decide to take up the role. We wish him well as he undertakes his new duties geared towards scaling the club to greater heights.”

Professional lawyer

Gicheru is a lawyer by profession having completed his exams at the Kenya School of Law last year. He was appointed Wazito captain in 2018 and led the team to claiming the NSL title in the 2018-19 season which guaranteed their promotion to the KPL for the second time in the club’s history.

The lanky defender, who is in his second stint at the club, was part of the Wazito side that gained promotion to the KPL for the first time in the club’s history in 2017 under then coach Frank Ouna.

In between the two stints, he featured for KCB who he also helped seal promotion in 2018.

Joe Waithira will now serve as the team’s captain with the winger having worn the armband in the league opening draw with Nzoia Sugar.
