The start of the 2019/20 Kenyan Premier League (KPL) campaign was not the best for Sofapaka, as the 2009 league winners fell 1 – 2 at home to Posta Rangers, and they will be seeking redemption on their second outing, when they take on Ulinzi Stars on Saturday 14 September.
In the last four meetings, Sofapaka have not lost to Ulinzi Stars, and after their opening day loss, Batoto Ba Mungu will be hoping that they extend this domination, having picked two wins and two draws in the last four of this fixture.
Defender George Maelo, a key player for Sofapaka, who is only returning from injury and other work duties, has termed this a tough match even as they head to Nakuru but he is banking on the team’s preparations to carry them through.
“It will be a tough game away from home but looking at how we have trained this week, I think we are in very good shape. We are focused and everyone knows how important it will be for us to win and bounce back,” he said on the club’s official website.
Meanwhile, Isma Watenga, the team’s newly signed keeper, is hoping for a good start with the side, and has backed the team to end its trophy drought this season.
“I am a winner with a good mentality and I want to lift trophies with Sofapaka. I know that it has been long since the team lifted a trophy and I want to play a role to see that thirst quenched. The Kenyan league is very tough but hopefully we will make it,” he said, also quoted on the club website.
While Sofapaka fell to Posta Rangers in Narok, Ulinzi Stars picked a 2 – 0 win over Kisumu All Stars in Kisumu.
