Matano tears into Tusker’s experienced players after weekend draw with Mathare

Tusker FC head coach Robert Matano was left unimpressed by his charges, especially the more senior members of his team after the brewers failed to secure their first win of the season on Saturday 14 September by allowing Mathare United to sneak in a late equalizer in the two teams’ KPL round 2 fixture that ended 1-1.

Young forward Klinsman Omulanga came off the bench at the Kenyatta Stadium to deny Tusker all three points with virtually the last kick of the game, finishing with a right footed shot from just outside the area.

Disastrous opener

Tusker, who had lost their opening fixture of the season in disastrous circumstances to defending champions Gor Mahia, had taken the lead via a Timothy Otieno penalty midway through the second stanza but a lack of concentration allowed Mathare a chance to take something away from the game and in his post-match assessment, Matano lamented his team’s inability to stick to a game plan for an entire 90 minutes.

He said, “A lack of character in defending, we can’t defend as a team. We can’t control the tempo of the game. We have been doing pressure defensive training and the goal we conceded was very poor.

“My boys have to learn to defend and play 90 minutes as well as extra/added minutes. They have to organize themselves better on the pitch because we have experienced players who can dictate terms, control the tempo of the game and they did not do it.

“There was some bit of maturity in the midfield but I must maintain that we have to improve. Know how to deal with those small spaces in behind our defence,” he said.

Five changes

The former Sofapaka, Ulinzi Stars tactician made five changes for Saturday’s fixture to the team that lost to Gor Mahia with leading club top scorer Boniface Muchiri, who notched a brace in the game against Gor, missing out due to what is believed to be an injury sustained while on international duty.

Luke Namanda and Hashim Sempala made their debuts on Saturday after joining in the offseason with Sempala making his second debut for the club after rejoining following a short stint with Gor Mahia.

Tusker will next take on Zoo FC away in Kericho on Sunday 22.
