KPL players dominate Kenya U20 side heading to Uganda for CECAFA U20

The Kenya U20 national team, Rising Stars left by road to Uganda on Wednesday 18 September, for the 2019 CECAFA U20 Championships, with a majority of the team composed of players plying their trade in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL).

Head coach Stanley Okumbi trimmed the team from the initial 41 players called up to 20, who made the trip and of the squad, 17 are drawn from KPL sides.

Only Boniface Mwangemi of Dagoretti High School, Chris Owino of FC Talanta and Ronald Shichenje (Aspire Academy) are the players in the team who don’t feature in the Kenyan top league.

Dropped

Among the players dropped before the team departed, was AFC Leopards new signing Collins Shichenje, as well as Kariobangi Sharks duo of Kevinton Machika and defender Boniface Onyango.

KCB FC’s Eric Kinuthia also did not make the list.

Rising Stars have been pooled on Group B of the competition, where they will face Tanzania, Zanzibar and Ethiopia in the competition set to start on Saturday 21 September.
